Professor Ionel Chicinaş, from Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, Romania, has over 40 years’ experience in the field of magnetic materials and over 20 years in obtaining magnetic materials by mechanical alloying and spark plasma sintering. His area of expertise includes: nanocrystalline and nanocomposite magnetic powders production by mechanical alloying/milling, production of bonded magnets, sintered magnetic materials (soft and hard), obtaining of nanocrystalline compacts (composite and sintered – SPS), materials characterization, structural, morphological, and thermal analysis (X-ray diffraction, SEM + EDX, DTA, DSC+TG).

He was many times invited professor/researcher at Neel Institute/CNRS and Université Joseph Fourier/Université Grenoble Alpes, Grenoble, French, Institute of Physics/Safarik University, Kosice, Slovakia, Carlos III University from Madrid.

Professor Ionel Chicinaş is the leader of the Magnetic Materials and Nanomaterials (MatMagNano) research group from Technical University of Cluj-Napoca. He is the leader in mechanical alloying/milling research in Romania. He has been involved in over 60 competitive projects, being the principal investigator in 27. Also, he conducted 18 projects direct financed by industry. The achievements of Professor Ionel Chicinaş and his group: (i) obtaining soft magnetic nanocrystalline powders of Ni3Fe, Supermalloy (NiFeMo, NiFeCuMo), Fe-Si, HITPERM, soft magnetic ferrites; (ii) soft magnetic nanocomposite materials, from nanocrystalline mechanically alloyed powders; (iii) nanocomposite powder of soft ferrite/alloy type (ZnFe2O4/Fe or Ni, NiFe2O4/Fe, Mn0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4/Supermalloy etc.) and nanocomposite compacts; (iv) he developed 2 mechanical alloying method (mechanical alloying combined with annealing, MA with inoculation of the germs of desired product in the starting mixture) and designed and realized an home-made spark plasma sintering equipment.

Professor Ionel Chicinaş published more than 125 ISI papers, over 1000 independent citations (Scopus), h=22 (ISI WoS), h = 23 (Scopus) and h = 25 (Google Scholar). He given over 30 oral presentations in international conferences with 9 invited/keynote talks and coordinated research activities at different levels: PhD, postdocs, and research teams within various research projects with national funding. He was awarded by the Romanian Academy with “Aurel Vlaicu” Prize and by Technical University of Cluj-Napoca (Excellence Award – three times).
